Hi everyone,
“There is nothing holding you back in life more than yourself.” – Brianna Wiest
I hate that this quote is true. Because it would be so much easier if we could blame external factors, wouldn’t it? The difficult partner. The unsupportive boss. The system that wasn’t built for us.
And yes – those things are real. They exist. They matter.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth I’ve watched play out hundreds of times in our community:
Hi there,
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what makes some leaders magnetic and others… forgettable.
It’s not intelligence. It’s not even experience.
It’s something quieter. Something most of us don’t even realize we’re doing wrong.
We obsess over finding the perfect words.
We rehearse our presentations until they’re flawless. We craft emails like we’re writing poetry. We believe that if we just say the right thing, people will listen.
But here’s what I’ve learned:
People aren’t just listening to what you say. They’re watching how you say it.
Your Body Tells the Truth (Even When Your Words Don’t)
You can stand in front of a room and say, “I’m confident about this strategy.”
But if your voice is shaking, or you avoid eye contact?
Nobody hears confidence. They hear doubt.
And the thing is—we’re all wired to pick up on this. It’s instinctive. We’ve been reading body language and tone for survival since the beginning of time. That hasn’t changed.
Which means as leaders, we’re constantly giving ourselves away without even knowing it.
The Gap That Kills Credibility
Think about the last time you watched a leader speak and something just felt… off.
Maybe their words were strong, but their delivery was shaky. Maybe they said “we’ve got this,” but their posture said “I’m not sure.”
That gap? That’s what erodes trust.
Because when your words don’t match your presence, people believe the presence. Every time.
This Is Where Real Leadership Lives
At Women in Law UAE, we talk a lot about visibility and influence. But influence isn’t just about being seen—it’s about being believed.
And that only happens when everything aligns: your message, your tone, your body language, your energy.
This is exactly why we’re organizing events like our Personal Branding sessions with DIFC on October 20th and November 3rd (two half-days that I’m super excited about).
Because personal branding isn’t just about crafting the right elevator pitch. It’s about showing up as the leader you want to be seen as—and making sure every part of you communicates that.
We’re creating these spaces—webinars, seminars, sessions like this—because we know that leadership skills aren’t built in isolation. They’re built in community, with honest feedback, practical tools, and women who get it.
What You Can Start Doing Today
You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be congruent.
Ask yourself:
→ Does my tone match the confidence of my message?
→ Am I standing like I believe what I’m saying?
→ What am I communicating before I even open my mouth?
Record yourself. Watch it back. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s also where the breakthrough happens.
Regulate your nervous system before big moments—deep breaths, a quick walk, whatever resets you.
And most importantly: Be the leader you’re trying to project. Do what you say. Live with integrity. Because the fastest way to communicate with authority is to embody it.
You’re Already Communicating
Even in silence. Even when you think no one’s watching.
The question isn’t just “What will I say next?”
It’s: “What am I already saying without realizing it?”
That’s the work. And that’s what we’re here to support you with—at Women in Law UAE, and in everything we do together.
See you on October 20th?
Warmly,
Laura
